The two roads from Mathura to Vrindavan
There are two practical ways to drive between the towns. Which one is faster depends on where in Vrindavan you are going.
| Route | Best for | What you pass |
|---|---|---|
| Mathura–Vrindavan Marg (direct road) | Old town: Banke Bihari, Nidhivan, Radha Raman | Gita Mandir (Birla Mandir), Pagal Baba Temple |
| NH-19 to Chhatikara, then Chhatikara Road | ISKCON, Prem Mandir, hotels on Chhatikara Road | The highway, then Vrindavan's newer temple belt |
From Mathura Junction railway station or the new bus stand, either road works; drivers usually choose based on traffic at the time. If you are staying near ISKCON or Prem Mandir, the Chhatikara side is usually smoother.
Distance from common starting points
| From (Mathura) | To ISKCON / Prem Mandir | To Banke Bihari area |
|---|---|---|
| Mathura Junction station | ≈ 11–13 km | ≈ 13–15 km |
| Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi | ≈ 10–12 km | ≈ 12–14 km |
| Mathura new bus stand | ≈ 11–13 km | ≈ 13–15 km |
Distances are approximate road ranges for planning. Traffic in Vrindavan's old town adds more time than the extra kilometres suggest.
How to get from Mathura to Vrindavan
Taxi (door to door)
The easiest option with luggage, elderly parents or a fixed train time. A taxi picks you up at the station or your hotel and drops you at the nearest point cars are allowed near your temple or hotel. Short local trips like this are priced per trip rather than per km — see taxi service in Mathura or ask for the fare on WhatsApp.
Auto-rickshaw
Shared and reserved autos run between Mathura and Vrindavan, especially from outside Mathura Junction and the bus stand. Agree the fare before you start.
E-rickshaw inside Vrindavan
Inside Vrindavan, e-rickshaws are the usual way through the narrow lanes around Banke Bihari and Nidhivan, where cars cannot go.
Bus
Buses run on the Mathura–Vrindavan road. They are the cheapest option but slower and crowded at peak times.
When the 15 km takes an hour
- Weekends and Ekadashi bring large crowds from Delhi NCR; expect slow traffic into Vrindavan from late morning.
- Festivals — Janmashtami, Holi, Radhashtami and Kartik month — can close roads near the main temples and divert traffic.
- Temple opening times create rushes: the streets near Banke Bihari are busiest just before morning and evening darshan.
- Starting early (before 8 am) is the simplest way to avoid most of it.

Roughly 11–15 km — the nearer figure for ISKCON and Prem Mandir, the higher one for the Banke Bihari area.
A taxi is easiest with luggage or a group; autos are cheaper; e-rickshaws are best for the last stretch inside Vrindavan's old town.
Not to the gate. The lanes around the temple are narrow and often closed to cars, so you walk or take an e-rickshaw for the last stretch.
